On the 14th July 2008, His Grace, the Archbishop of Malta, Mons. Paul Cremona O.P. arrived at St. Dominic’s Hostel, Blacktown, NSW from Melbourne. His contingent consisted of: five Maltese priests, namely Fr. Alfred Vella, Fr. Louis Suban, Fr. Savio Vella, Fr. Marco Portelli, Fr. Karm Debattista MSSP and a group of 45 young people. They came to Sydney to celebrate World Youth Day 2008. They left Malta on the 5th July and spent their first week in Victoria.
A big welcome awaited them at St. Dominic’s by everyone present. Following lunch, Mass was celebrated at The Annunciation Hall by His Grace, The Archbishop together with all the Maltese visiting and local priests, who came to meet the new Archbishop of Malta. After mass, our residents and many Maltese/Australians met the archbishop including the host families who introduced themselves to the youths and took them to their homes.
During their 1st week in Sydney, His Grace, priest and youths followed the WYD activities. In the second week, his Grace continued his pastoral visit among the Maltese migrants, extending to Queensland, Wollongong and Canberra, besides various localities in Sydney. The youths participated in various excursions; Featherdale Wildlife, Blue Mountains, Nepean Belle and the youth festival at Mt. Schonstatt, Mulgoa.
The pilgrims of The WYD 2008, terminated their visit in Sydney on the 29th July 2008, with a concelebrated Mass by His Grace, the Archbishop and his fellow priests. Among those present were the youths, the host families and other friends who came to bid farewell to His Grace and the contingent from Malta. The mass was followed by a lovely meal organised by our kitchen staff and a variety of performances on stage. |
